Neuroplasticity and Central Sensitization are the causes of persistence of chronic pain. The pain perception neuropathways in our central nervous systems have been reprogrammed or reorganized in such a way that the perception of pain persists long after the original stimulus from our bodies have stopped. We have few therapies, drugs or procedures which can correct central sensitization. The most promising therapies are those that use the mind itself to reprogram the dysfunctional neuro-pathways. Mindfulness based cognitive therapy is one of those therapies. It has helped many patients but it has not become mastered to the point of standardization and application in clinical practice. Its on the fringe of Medicine so to speak but it is becoming clear that it is explained by the known science of neurophysiology.
