Surgical procedures and medications play a limited and disappointing role in the treatment of chronic pain. These therapies are not effective against the central sensitization component of chronic pain. At this time the only access that we have to central sensitization is through the mind. As doctors we can’t dispense the cure for chronic pain. Patients will not find a cure unless they look inside themselves.
For patients with chronic pain this is one of their most important obstacles to getting better. They have to look past procedures and drugs to get better. There is no effective therapy, procedure or drug. It will take considerably more effort on the patients part.
